People visit Dartmouth for many reasons. It has a beautiful old town centre steeped in history, it has magnificent restaurants and hotels, and, of course, it sits on the banks of the River Dart - probably the most picturesque river in the country.

At some time or other, most visitors cross the river on one of the car or foot ferries, many take a trip on one of the passenger boats that sail between Dartmouth and Totnes; and more adventurous visitors hire day boats and explore on their own.

The Dart weaves a magical spell that few can resist and a trip on the river is often the first step towards buying your own boat - a boat that will allow you to go where you want, when you want; a boat that will take you to one of the coves just outside the harbour entrance, or up one of the creeks that river boats cannot access - creeks where time has stood still for many years. A boat allows you to stop-off for a meal or a drink in one of the upstream pubs like the Ferry Boat Inn at Dittisham (pictured left) or the Maltster's Arms at Tuckenhay (pictured right).

Those who decide to buy their own boat often start off in a small way with an inflatable, perhaps fitted with a second-hand outboard - a moderate outlay that will not break the bank if you decide boating is not for you. But it usually works the other way. The following season, you will probably start looking for a new outboard, or a larger, faster, more robust boat.
